Over the past several years, ILM Foundation Las Vegas has quietly served the Las Vegas area in various capacities. The climate and needs of America’s biggest tourist attraction calls for a different concentration than its counterpart ILM_LA. ILM Las Vegas has been active in different arenas around the city since 2009 when CFO Naim Shah Jr. resided there. From 2011 until now co-founder Hanafi Shakur has taken over the reins.
Teaching Islamic Studies classes and being the Khatib at several Masajid in Las Vegas, Hanafi has been an active member of the Muslim community. He has also led ILM Las Vegas in establishing an education component where classes are taught to native English people who don’t have the ability to read. There are also ESL classes for those trying to learn English. Over the last three years approximately 100 hundred students have benefitted from the program, which partners with the Clark County Library System. ILM Las Vegas is very active in the interfaith community, where it is often asked to participate as speakers during programs and worship services.
Lastly, ILM Las Vegas has established a wonderful relationship with the Culinary Workers Union. The Union represents over 50,000 hotel workers in Las Vegas. ILM Las Vegas has been instrumental in helping the workers in their fight for good wages and affordable healthcare.
“ILM Foundation’s mission is to teach life skills to economically underprivileged youth and adults so that social ills are replaced with opportunities for intellectual and economic empowerment.”
