The #BeEssential teach-in will build awareness about the humanitarian crisis in California where, as the last count in January 2020, over 151,000 inhabitants experience homelessness. Los Angeles County is home to 40% of the state’s homeless population at 66,433. Seventy percent of unhoused Californians are without shelter, comprising more than half of all people in America without shelter. Between March 2020 and July 2021, up to 1,493 unhoused persons may have passed away in Los Angeles County’s streets. Studies across the state highlight alarming morbidity and mortality rates of the unhoused due to COVID.
